Culturism (cŭl-ch́әr-ĭź-әm) n. 1. The philosophy, science and art of managing and protecting majority cultures. 2. A philosophy which holds that majority cultures have the right to define, protect and promote themselves. 3. The study of culturism.

 

Mul·ti·cul·tur·al·ism (mŭl-tē-kŭl-chәr-әl-ĭź-әm) n. 1. Of or relating to a social or educational theory that encourages interest in many cultures within a society rather than in only a mainstream culture.

 

For each of the following questions define what the culturist and multiculturalist policies are before defining and debating your own position. Are you more culturist in some areas and multiculturalist in others? Overall would you identify yourself as a culturist or a multiculturalist?

 

Many cultures have disappeared.  Has the world now agreed on a common set of values?  Has history ended? Does America need protection or can it never fall or falter?  If it can fall, what are some of its weaknesses? What culturist policies might help strengthen it?

 

Is America just like every other nation or distinct? Do all nations believe in free speech, feminism, and the separation of church and state? If you were screening immigrants, which cultural traits do you think would be considered incompatible with our culture?  Would having more educated or less educated people immigrate be better? Do we have a right to say who comes into our nation?  

 

Do nations have any rights to define themselves?  On what basis can we say that cultures that practice female genital mutilation wrong? Do we have a right or a duty to change them? Do they have a right to define and defend themselves?

 

Are countries with diversity more or less stable? Why should we work to increase unity? Why should we work to increase diversity? What are the dangers / benefits of each?

 

In the absence of guidance would you expect people to be naturally good? Does celebrating differences or giving moral guidance, given your answer, make more sense?

 

Would you permit pornography and snuff films to be on television 24 hours a day? What level of obscenity and anti-social messages are you willing to tolerate on television? What level of obscenity and anti-social messages are you willing to tolerate in public?  Is there more legitimacy in regulating the public sphere than the private sphere?

 

Should our schools teach that our culture is special and deserves protection? Should our schools teach that all cultures are all equally worthy of respect? 

 

Do some cultural attributes lead to wealth and some to poverty? What are some cultural characteristics that lead to wealth?  What are some cultural traits that lead to poverty? Are some cultural characteristics more desirable than others?  What are these?  

 

Are there some behaviors we should not tolerate? What are the problems with excess tolerance? What are the dangers with excess intolerance? What sorts of culturist decisions are okay? Which violate our traditions?

 

Should the definition of “American” necessarily include wanting America to succeed?  

 

Is it racist or culturist to profile people for national security purposes?  Should the government be neutral in regards to values?

 

Are there universal human rights? Do other nations have a right to limit the amount and type of rights they allow? Do cultures have rights?
